Forex - Forex market is mixed ahead of US presidential election
The Dollar tends to gain as risk aversion rises because dollar-based investors repatriate money or look for safety in U.S. Treasury debt. US factory activity plunged to a 26-year low last month boosted US and global recession fears. Analyst said the US manufacturing data, an $11bio capital injection in South Korea, an interest rate cut in India and expected rate cuts in the euro zone, Britain and Australia show ongoing stress in financial markets and the world economy even as interbank lending markets continue to loosen up. The European Central Bank and the Bank of England are expected to cut rates by at least 50bp. The Federal Reserve last week cut its key rate by 50bp to 1 percent and the Bank of Japan cut its rate to 0.30% percent from 0.50%. Analysts say the BoE is the most likely of the three to surprise markets with an even heftier rate cut.

The rebound in stocks and high-yielders came after the Federal Reserve reduced borrowing costs by 50bp to 1% on Wednesday and left the door open for further easing of monetary policy. The Fed also approved currency swap lines with central banks in several major emerging countries, making Dollars available to help them deal with the credit crunch.

The European Central Bank on Wednesday said it will allow banks to swap a larger range of their assets for central bank funds and offer more funds across a range of currencies in its latest attempt to combat the punishing financial crisis.
Forex - Euro gain on bank rescue plan but economic worries persist
The Dollar consolidated on Tuesday while short-term interest rates eased following aggressive steps by global authorities to pump cash into troubled banks to resolve the credit crisis. The United States said it would inject $250 billion into banks, including the country's nine largest. The move followed similar initiatives in Britain, France and Germany. As a result there was some improvement in risk appetite, causing investors to unwind some safe-haven trades in both the Dollar and the Yen. Such correction in the Dollar was not surprising given the recent rally. Data on Tuesday from Germany's ZEW research institute showed a bigger-than-expected slide in investor sentiment in October, suggesting the euro zone's top economy may be in for a prolonged slump. Analysts said they expected the European Central Bank to cut interest rates through 2009 to about 2.5% and the Federal Reserve to ease by another 50bp to 1%, which should narrow the Euro's yield appeal.

The flurry of initiatives to stem the worst financial crisis since the 1930s increased investor appetite for risk, though analysts were uncertain whether the improving mood would last very long. But trading activity was subdued due to a national holiday in Japan, Canada and with US bond markets closed for the Columbus Day holiday.

    After stock markets around the world suffered their worst ever weekly losses last week, leaders from Group of Seven rich nations set out a plan of action to stem the crisis and European leaders agreed to inject public funds into the banking system if necessary. Finance ministers and central bankers from the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and Italy issued a one-page communiqu?t the end of their discussions on Friday describing only their decisions on joint action to overcome the financial market crisis. The flurry of initiatives to stem the worst financial crisis since the 1930s increased investor appetite for risk, though analysts were uncertain whether the improving mood would last very long. But trading activity was subdued due to a national holiday in Japan, Canada and with US bond markets closed for the Columbus Day holiday.
